Educators' Reviews
A great story about the birth and life of a Hummingbird with amazing photos taken by the Author Barbara Kurtz. She tells an excellent story from the birth of Samantha and her brother till they
leave the nest their mother built. She outlines the type of hummingbird as Costas and how the hummingbird mothers are very particular about their nests, spending days protecting their eggs till
they are hatched and providing them with food till they are old enough to fly and leave the nest. This is a perfect book for teachers to teach their student about the nature of birds. A must have
for a teacher's classroom.

"This is a book that does an amazing job at blending a story that is both entertaining and educational at the same time. My two kids, ages 7 and 8, love how the story is told from the perspective of the young hummingbird Samantha. She is so cute, they connected to her right away. The photos are amazing and help you to get a close up view of hummingbird life. As an educator I love all the factual information that is sprinkled throughout the book. I also like how the author explains otherwise difficult vocabulary in way young children can understand.
After we had received the book in the mail we immediately sat down and read it together. After we read it both kids decided they wanted to take the book to school and read it to their classmates. What made it even more exciting and special was that the author is their grandmother! The students loved it and both of their teachers requested a copy to add to their classroom library.
This book would be a great resource for students who are doing a presentation or report on hummingbirds. It is filled with many interesting facts. It would also make a fantastic follow-up activity after a class trip to a museum or aviary. Overall it is an adorable story of a hummingbird family that is sure to capture the heart of anyone who reads it."—Kelly Kurtz
"With 30 years of teaching experience as a math/science specialist at the elementary level, I highly recommend this story. The photographs are amazing and the text is beautifully written for young children to follow the story of the birth of these two tiny hummingbirds. What a perfect tool for the teacher to use to motivate and spark students' interest in Mother Nature! My two grandchildren love for me to read this story and are already talking about when it will be warm enough to put out the hummingbird feeders! An extra copy was ordered so our grandson will be able to take a copy to his first day of kindergarten in August as a gift to his new class. Wonderful story!!"—Jacquelyn Carson
"Hummingbird feeders hang outside our preschooler's classroom windows low enough for all the children to gather as the tiny birds whip in and out gathering their nectar. A Hummingbird's Story: How I Came to Be is the perfect storybook to capture the children's interest and enhance the teachable moment with the young audience. The beautiful, detailed photographs depict the life cycle of the hummingbird and introduce valuable vocabulary in a way that preschoolers and elementary children will easily relate to and understand.
A Hummingbird's Story is a "must have" for the classroom. It is the perfect gift for a new teacher, your child's or grandchild's classroom, and/or the special child in your life who you wish to share your passion and awe with of nature and all its' magnificent creatures. Just right to include with a hummingbird feeder for a special Valentine's Day package!"—Janet Stoddard
